Synopsis

A veteran public school teacher—frustrated by public perceptions and an increasing emphasis on testing—follows four high school students through a school year to explore what’s working.

Politicians describe today's schools as dysfunctional and obsolete. But what's the reality?  Deacon Warner, a Minneapolis high school teacher, takes a year off to find an answer.  In this documentary, he follows the lives of four students—from four different high schools—for one school year. Through the eyes of gifted math student Gabriel, aspiring actress Lindsey, struggling Hmong immigrant Annabelle, and Talia, an inner-city student hoping to attend college, he discovers the importance of engaging kids as individuals —and the risks of too much testing.
